Alex Katz: Theater & Dance

Alex Katz has collaborated with dancers such as Paul Taylor, integrating dance into his painting by considering both part of a "tradition of gesture." This book analyzes, for the first time, his decades of stage work, introducing postwar art principles into theater and dance, with collaborations on fifteen productions by Taylor and others such as Yoshiko Chuma and Laura Dean. It highlights set designs such as the pop-art cutouts for George Washington Crossing the Delaware (1961), bringing together previously unpublished paintings, sketches, photographs, and essays on the New York avant-garde of the 1960s-1980s.
