Bestiaria

Bestiaria takes up the invitation extended by Borges and Margarita Guerrero in The Book of Imaginary Beings and proposes a non-sequential reading, akin to looking through a kaleidoscope. In the style of Herbaria, the volume offers a visual and symbolic exploration of the animal kingdom, inspired by the ancient bestiaries that drew moral and spiritual meanings from living beings rather than scientific data. It combines the real and the imaginary, where biology intertwines with myth.

The book explores classical, fantastical and monstrous styles, bringing together mythical creatures, monsters and extinct animals, ranging from medieval illustrations to contemporary works in painting, printmaking and mixed media illustration. It forms an animal kaleidoscope that invites us to explore and celebrate the relationship between animality and the fantastical throughout the history of art.
